Mugwort
(Artemisia vulgaris)

The Latin name Artemisia derives from the Greek goddess Artemis, the caretaker of women, children, and wild animals. Artemis was skillful in herbal medicine, which, among myriad other uses, had been applied for the alleviation of typical gynecological disorders.

Among the ancient Germans, mugwort was also called solstice belt. They used it to banish spirits and demons, but also for protection, blessings, and to accompany a deceased person into the otherworld.

When burned, mugwort spreads the typical smell of burned herbs. It is especially suitable for use in incense blends.
